GABRIELLE MACDONALD - PAPIER HQ
Tell us about yourself and your business journey.
Papier hq started out by designing prints for friends and family as gifts or custom pieces. This was where it really began. My background is Textile Design so it was a very natural progression for me. My previous role had me working across a wide variety of areas of the business including product development, design, marketing, account management. It really set me up to be able to look after a variety of areas in my own business.
What made you get into business?
I reached a point in my career where I felt like I had learnt everything I could in that position and it was time to take a risk and start my own business. I had always wanted to do it and it felt like the timing was finally right. I went from resigning from my job to four months later launching our website. It was a crazy whirlwind experience. I have always admired strong business women and men who are dominating their industries. I’m very lucky I get to do what I love everyday. It definitely doesn’t come without its challenges though.
How do you deal with adversity?
I feel like every single business owner will have to deal with adversity at some stage. Working in retail as a student really taught me patience. If things go wrong I like to pick up the phone and call them so we can talk it through. In most situations customers don't set out to be difficult and you can almost always turn them around if you are positive and apologetic.
What are your top tips for other women wanting to get into business?
Take calculated risks and develop a product you are truly passionate about. If you create something that is unique and important to you, it will shine through in everything you do.
Top tips to stay motivated?
Make lists and give yourself deadlines. It's really easy to lack motivation when you don't have someone to report to. It's really important to hold yourself accountable. One of the key reasons I designed a weekly planner was so I could keep myself organised!
What are your future plans for your business?
We just released our first ever stationery range. It was a really proud moment for us. Blood, sweat and a lot of tears were poured into the development of our range. We really want to grow this area of the business and also continue to design beautiful wall art ranges that our customers love!
What's something you wish you could tell your younger self?
When I was younger I lacked a lot of confidence. It was different life experiences that really taught me to take risks and believe in myself. I truly believe everything in life offers you a lesson so never regret taking certain opportunities or taking a different path to your friends. Don't compare your life to others as everyone has a different journey. As long as you’re living a life that's fulfilling to you then it doesn’t matter what everyone else is doing.
Words that you live by?
Don't sweat the small stuff! It will all work out in the end.
